K-2 League

K-2 League Structure and Information

Welcome to Sartell Youth Baseball.  Our goal in Sartell is to not only teach your child baseball, but to also help them receive a better understanding and love for the game.  Our purpose for players is to always have fun and enjoy the game with their coaches and friends.  We keep the kids active while developing their baseball skills.

When registering you have the choice to register your child for Pitchball or Rookie Ball.  Below you will find a short description of the two leagues.

Teams are generally 10-12 players.  We try to leverage a minimum of 3 parent coaches per team to help keep things organized and running smoothly.  This also helps maintain the safety of the kids.  When registering your child, please indicate whether you able to help coach the team.

Games will run every Monday and Wednesday from the first week of June until the last week of July.  There will be no games around the 4th of July (exact dates TBD).  Pitchball will run from 5:45 to 7:00 pm.  Rookie Ball will run from 6:45 to 8:00 pm.  Game schedules and field locations will be emailed to parents 1 week before the season begins.  In the case of unplayable weather or field conditions, you will be notified via email or social media.

In late July, when the action from the older leagues has slowed down, we’ll work to schedule a few of the games at the fields in Pinecone Central Park.

To end the season, we will be hosting a jamboree on the first Saturday in August at Pine Cone Park for all interested teams and players.  This will run from morning to early afternoon.  Schedule will be determined by amount of teams that register.

Just a few notes about league structure:

League structure allows you to sign your child up for an age and skill appropriate level.

Pitchball ages 5-7

Pitch Ball is primarily for five- and six-year-olds who are just starting to play organized baseball. The primary objective by the end of the season is to ensure that each player has a positive experience with baseball, wants to play again the following year, and has successfully demonstrated these skills: warm up techniques, names of defensive positions, how to execute a throw (proper grip), proper fielding position (down and ready), how to hold a bat properly, what to do after the ball is hit (as a batter and a runner), and knows why and when to run to the next base.

Rookie Ball ages 7-8

Rookie Ball is primarily for seven- and eight-year-olds who have successfully demonstrated the Pitch Ball skills. As with Pitch Ball, the primary objective at this level is to ensure that each player has a positive experience with baseball, wants to play again the following year, and has learned these skills: team concept (if the ball is hit to your buddy, letting him or her field it), warm up techniques, number of outs per inning, fielding techniques (proper down and ready position), uses both hands to catch a ball versus one-handed or trapped catches, understands where to make the defensive play, proper batting position, proper base running (on the ground versus in the air), and good sportsmanship.

A player is ready for Rookie Ball when the player is starting to catch the ball with the glove "up" (at face level) as opposed to basket catches with the glove "down." The player will be successful putting the ball in play in most coach-pitch at bats. A ball thrown toward a Rookie Ball player's head will usually result in the player making an effort to catch the ball with periodic success.

Whatever the progression, it is important to make certain that a child is not pushed too fast where he or she is not given enough time to learn, practice, and master the fundamentals of baseball. Remember, most of us will not play professional baseball, but by learning how to play the game and having fun while doing it, we can teach our kids the life lessons---like the values of determination, persistence, staying open to learning, and managing emotions around any frustration our kids may feel around their skill sets---that will serve them well in life far beyond the diamond.

Please Note:  All players are required to provide their own batting helmet for the K-2 League.
